Automatically Generate Maps and Directions with Google Apps Script

Following up on our recent post about the new Doc List capability in Google Apps Script, we thought we’d take a moment to look a little more closely at another new feature in Apps Script - integration with Google Maps. Google Maps has had an API for quite some time, but now we’ve made it very easy to generate customized maps and driving directions straight from a script.

A mail merge is often used to automate some of the drudgery involved in sending invitations to a large number of people. With the new Apps Script Maps Service you can easily add a map image to the email, and even add a marker showing the event location.

While that’s nice, it’s hardly a time saver - why write code to generate the same image repeatedly? A much more useful feature is generating a custom map for each guest, along with personalized driving directions. We’ve made a spreadsheet template that includes just such a script - it’s available here.

Let’s look at a short code snippet that illustrates the calls required to generate a map image and add a marker at the start and end addresses:

function getMap (start, end) {

// Generate personalized static map.

var directions = Maps.newDirectionFinder()

.setOrigin(start)

.setDestination(end)

.getDirections();

var map = Maps.newStaticMap().setSize(500, 350);

map.setMarkerStyle(Maps.StaticMap.MarkerSize.MID,
"red"
, null);

map.addMarker(start);

map.addMarker(end);

return map.getMapUrl()

}

Running the function with start and end set to Google, San Francisco and Google, Mountain View, we get a link to the following image:

Along with generating maps images, the Maps feature can also find directions, retrieve elevation data and even perform some geocoding operations. Please note that any data returns by these APIs should not be used without displaying an associated map image - see the Google Maps API Terms of Service for more details.

Faculty 2 0 Joel L Hartman Charles Dziuban and James Brophy Ellison

URL: http://www.educause.edu/apps/er/erm07/erm0753.asp

"(Conclusion)...As faculty members confront the expanding impact that technology is having on their scholarship, research, teaching, and students—what Peter Vaill calls "Permanent White Water"—IT organizations must assess what role they will play in shaping, implementing, and supporting the assimilation of IT into the teaching and learning process. Should the goal be to persuade and assist faculty members to adopt technology, or should it be to enable systemic transformation? When technology is "bolted on" to an existing process, the usual result is a modest improvement in the process and also higher costs. To obtain both greater improvement and reduced costs, higher education institutions must redesign the process so as to take maximum advantage of the enabling capabilities of technologies. Such initiatives, as Bates suggests, will ultimately produce the greatest benefit for the largest number of faculty in a manner that aligns with institutional goals, is sustainable, and will lead to transformation at course, program, and institutional levels."

A yummy article which also provides 13 bullets (of reflections) on how the diffusion of technology into the T&L space is producing a number changes to which faculty members must adapt. Also, check out the Teaching Excellence and Faculty Development sections. In short, the whole article is mind awakening and inspiring, or actually a bit scary if you are not IT-savvy :)

C Program and Algorithm for Conversion of an Expression from Infix to Postfix

In infix notation or expression operators are written in between the operands while in postfix notation every operator follows all of its operands.

Example:
Infix Expression: 5+3*2
Postfix Expression: 5 3 2*+.

Algorithm for Conversion of an Expression from Infix to Postfix

Let Q be any infix expression and we have to convert it to postfix expression P. For this the following procedure will be followed.

1. Push left parenthesis onto STACK and add right parenthesis at the end of Q.

2. Scan Q from left to right and repeat step 3 to 6 for each element of Q until the STACK is empty.

3. If an operand is encountered add it to P.

4. If a left parenthesis is encountered push it onto the STACK.

5. If an operator is encountered, then
  • Repeatedly pop from STACK and add to P each operator which has same precedence as or higher precedence than the operator encountered.
  • Push the encountered operator onto the STACK.

6. If a right parenthesis is encountered, then
  • Repeatedly pop from the STACK and add to P each operator until a left parenthesis is encountered.
  • Remove the left parenthesis; do not add it to P.

7. Exit

Do you know what PowerPoint templates you need for your next presentation and why

Today, use of PowerPoint presentation (Keynote or any other presentation format) to present your idea is quite common. One starts interacting with presentations from school days and journey continues throughout your life. Sometimes you view presentations and sometimes you have to create them to be viewed by others.

Be it some conference, event, college seminar, meeting, workshop or a training session, nothing is complete without an outstanding presentation. A great presentation backed by great speaker leaves long lasting impact on audience. People spend hours & days to work out that great presentation which audience can wow.

One of the major elements of a presentation is the template you use. Its well known fact that an average idea presented well can outperform a great idea that is presented poorly. Can you afford to loose VC funding for your start-up just because you werent able to represent the information and business plan rightly through your presentation. Besides targeted content you need a right blend of theme, images, graphs and other placeholders collectively known as template. But the question is what type of presentation template you need. It might be easy for you to decide whether it would be a business, education or a medical template but do you ever think what sort of images, objects or maps your template should have so that you have that creative liberty to make a mark through your presentation. Here is what you need to take care while buying a template:

Do you need a template having vector images or one with bitmap images?
If you create presentations quite often, you must have faced the problem of distortion and loss of quality of images when you re-size them. Mostly this happens when you try to enlarge a small image. Problem is grave when picture enlarged has some text on it. However, you must have noticed same is not true for clip art images/icons you insert from gallery. You enlarge them, re-size them without any loss of quality.

In order to understand this we need to understand the type of images. There are two type of images i) Bitmap (raster) ii) Vector graphics or images. Most common formats we use on daily basis like JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIF, PNG, BMP are all bitmap images. Bitmap is collection of tiny squares called pixels, which together form a pattern called image. Each pixel has its own color. When we try to enlarge a bitmap image beyond certain extant these small squares become visible and the edges become jagged or blurry.

Bitmap image pixlated
Vector graphics are made up of lines, curves, rectangles and other shapes. Vector image is a file containing instructions for drawing it. Biggest advantage of vector graphics over bitmap is that a image can be enlarged or re-sized without any loss of quality. Some popular Vector file formats include WMF, EPS, AI, EMF, CDR
  • Color of the whole vector graphic or its part can be changed
  • Shape of vector image can be modified
  • Vector images can be transparent
  • Vector images can be shrunk or enlarged to any extend without any loss of quality
So when you look for a cool template for your next presentation, you should think for a while to decide if you need a template having bitmap images (JPG,PNG) or Vector images so that you can tweak them, re-size them, ungroup them to suit your presentation needs. Most of PowerPoint template providers gives you the option of downloading a template with either vector or bitmap images.

How to Connect XenServer and Operating VM Using Java

At the time of final year project in MCA we have done a challenging project on citrix xenserver. Initially we did research and learn about virtualization, xenserver and xen java API concepts later we decided to do a web based project and named as xenserver management on cloud computing. We developed a web console to interact with xenserve and performing various operations on it. In our project we did different modules like establishing connection with  xenserver, getting the xenserver version, vm creation, VM destroy  and virtual machine life cycle. Life cycle is nothing but VM start, stop and reboot.

It is difficult to explain all modules so I will cover most useful functionality how to connect xenserver using java and VM life cycle using java. Don’t be confuse VM is called as virtual machine and it a guest operating system. In below video demo we can watch complete practical part like how to create web project, adding xen API jars in project, configuring apache tomcat server etc.

Create Windows 7 and Windows 8 Bootable USB

How to Create Windows Bootable USB Drive

Here is a little guide how to make a bootable USB pen drive, from an ISO picture of Windows setup plate, which you can use to introduce Windows 7 or Windows 8 on your machine that doesnt have a DVD drive. The USB stick that is going to be utilized needs to be no less than 4 GB and all the information on it will be deleted simultaneously.

Instructions to create bootable windows 7 USB

In the first place thing you going to need is Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool that might be downloaded from here. Download the document and introduce it on your machine.
Run the project and point it to the area of your ISO document, I used the Windows 8 RTM evaluation ISO here.
(On the off chance that you have an .img document you can simply rename the .img expansion to .iso, or utilize a converter likeISOBuddy or MagicISO
to change over from some other image organization to ISO format)
Windows 8 Bootable USB
On step 2 pick USB stick as the media type.
In step 3 select the drive in which your USB stick is connected to, press Begin flashing files and sit tight for the procedure to complete.
The instrument will reformat your USB stay and put Windows setup documents on it.
After it is carried out you can unplug your stick and introduce windows on any machine that can boot from a USB ( if a machine is not beginning the Windows setup, check your BIOS in the event that it is situated to boot from USB before the hard drive).
If you get “We were unable to copy your files. Please check your USB device and the selected ISO file and try again.” error check this post

Android beginner tutorial Part 56 Activity stacks and tasks

Today we will learn about Activity stacks and tasks.

In Android all Activity objects are saved in a stack. Whenever an Activity launches another Activity, the new one is moved to the stack and becomes the active Activity. The previous one also remains in the stack, but it is moved lower. Activity objects in a stack are never repositioned, they can only be added or removed.

When the user presses the Back button on their device, the current Activity is pushed out of the stack and is replaced with the previous one, which becomes visible again.

If there are multiple Activities of the same class in a stack, they are treated as separate instances.

A stack with Activities in it is called a task, which can be put in the foreground, when one of its Activities is currently active, or in the background, where its completely out of user focus.

If the user doesnt interact with a task for a long period of time, the system clears all of that tasks Activities, except for the main one. To save the state of an Activity before it is destroyed, which is done after the onDestroy() method is called, you can use the onSaveInstanceState() method. Android calls it before creating an Activity, before calling onPause().

The system sends a Bundle object this way, which can be used to store some data to later be able to recreate the same Activity state. When the Activity is once again called, the system kindly sends the Bundle with all the parameters youve written as a parameter of the onCreate() method, as well as the onRestoreInstanceState() method, which is called after onStart(), so that one of them (or both) could return the Activity to what it looked like before.

The onSaveInstanceState() and onRestoreInstanceState() methods are not a part of the lifecycle of an Activity. They wont always be called by the system. For example, the onSaveInstanceState() method is called when the Activity become vulnerable to being destroyed by the system, but it isnt called if the user willingly closes it. Thats good, because it is an intuitive and expected behaviour.

Because onSaveInstanceState() is not always called, if youre saving data you should do that when the application gets paused - in the onPause() function.

That way it will be possible to later restart the destroyed Activity (if the system decides to destroy it) with the saved previous state.

That is all for today.

Android beginner tutorial Part 90 Path and ArcShape

In this tutorial we will learn about drawing primitive shapes in Android using Path and ArcShape classes.

The Path class is similar in usage to the way shapes are drawn using AS3. It has the moveTo() and lineTo() methods that youve probably worked with before if you ever tried drawing graphics using Actionscript3.

Using this class it is possible to draw unordinary primitive shapes, like, for example, a star.

First we set up the path for the lines to follow:

Path p = new Path();
p.moveTo(50, 0);
p.lineTo(25, 100);
p.lineTo(100, 50);
p.lineTo(0, 50);
p.lineTo(75, 100);
p.lineTo(50, 0);

You can then apply the drawing to a ShapeDrawable object.

ShapeDrawable shape = new ShapeDrawable(new PathShape(p, 100, 100));
shape.setIntrinsicHeight(100);
shape.setIntrinsicWidth(100);
shape.getPaint().setColor(Color.RED);
shape.getPaint().setStyle(Paint.Style.STROKE);

Next class is ArcShape. This one lets us draw arcs, basically. There are two values you need to pass to the ArcShape constructor - float startAngle and float sweepAngle.

Example:

ShapeDrawable shape = new ShapeDrawable(new ArcShape(0, 250));
shape.setIntrinsicHeight(100);
shape.setIntrinsicWidth(100);
shape.getPaint().setColor(Color.RED);

Now weve covered all the primitive shape drawing classes.

Thanks for reading!

Tooltip is nothing but when you hover on the html element it shows a message and we can show tooltips on required images. The text is your choice you can put any message and we can also set the message direction. For example:  you can display message at top, right, left and bottom.

Panels are used to structure the content with some visible borders, headers and footers that can be used to indicate large section of your page.

Collapse panels contains the collapse action when we click on a element or link the content inside it visible and remaining all hides. For example: I have created four collapse panels when you click on first one, second and third will hides. Similarly when you click on second one, first and third will hides. I think you have learned something about tooltips and collapse panels. To get more idea run the below example in your local system.

Remove password pattern lock and even gmail account in your Cherry Mobile Superion Probe

Hi Yall

I thought this tablet does not have a way to hard reset or factory reset, but after 30 minutes I found a way to hard reset / factory reset it. Cherry Mobile Superion Probe has a FASTBOOT mode, you read it right FASTBOOT mode. You may never notice it but it has. After 30 minutes of fiddling the tablet I found the key to enter in the FASTBOOT mode.

I manage to wipe the tablet in WINDOWS first, but after rebooting the tablet it does not properly boot up it is just keep on rebooting in cherry mobile logo and android logo. What I did is that I tried to wipe it in Linux. And after rebooting and rebooted successfully into its normal state.

SO here is the procedure on how to factory reset your Cherry Mobile Superion Probe.

Download this file first and extract it
ADB Tools

NOTE: TRY WINDOWS MODE AT YOUR OWN RISK, AS I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY RECOVERED THE TABLET IN LINUX OS.

WINDOWS Mode

 1. Turn off your Tablet
2. Press Volume DOWN and Insert USB Cable
3. You will notice that it is stuck in Superion Probe Logo, that is the FASTBOOT mode.
4. Go to adb-fastboot-win folder that you downloaded and extracted
5. Open commandprompt.bat
6. Execute this command
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot

7. After rebooting cherry mobile boot tones. If you did not hear it, it will keep on rebooting but dont worry just head to Linux tutorial below.

LINUX Mode

First you need to update your package manager and download fastboot tools in android.

Here is how to download it
1. Open terminal emulator or press this ctrl + alt + T and it will open up Terminal, this is for Ubuntu, Lubuntu command that I have tried.

2. Then in terminal type the following command
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install android-tools-fastboot
3. After installing it enter FASTBOOT mode in your tablet.
4. Go to terminal again and execute this command
sudo fastboot -w
sudo fastboot reboot
 5. Wait for it to reboot, you will hear the cherry mobile boot power up tones. Smile you can now use your tablet :)

If you find this tutorial useful, a simple thank you in comment box will suffice :)
